Queens College and Mississippi Freedom Summer

THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2024 • 4 PM

REGISTER FOR ZOOM MEETING.

SIXTY YEARS AGO, students from campuses across the Northern United States, including Queens College, converged in Mississippi to volunteer for Freedom Summer, an initiative led by the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) to establish Freedom Schools and increase Black voter registration in the state. What was QC’s connection to this momentous civil rights project before, during, and after it was carried out? What led students to travel to Mississippi to help fight against injustices taking place hundreds of miles away? How did those QC students continue the fight against racism in Queens and on campus both immediately after Freedom Summer and in the decades after? What is the legacy of Freedom Summer for our campus and students today? In this presentation, primary sources from the QC archives help answer these questions, illuminating people, places, and events from this remarkable time.
